The Hands That Hold Me Up
I saw this picture on Instagram a couple of weeks ago. It's a magnificent shot of a bridge in Vietnam. I think it's amazing the amount of time and effort that was put into designing and then building such a complex structure.
But more than that, I think it's amazing that God can use a random picture of a bridge to speak life to a tired soul if I take the time to listen.
Ever since I saw this picture, my mind keeps being drawn back to it. The hands captivate me. They remind me of God's hands. And the bridge itself reminds me of the road I walk and how it's held up by the hands of my God.
Notice how the bridge turns. The people walking along on the far left or right of the picture can't see what's around that turn. Anything could be waiting for them around that bend - good or bad - and they won't see it clearly until they're there.
Just like in life. The road we were on that we thought was straight starts to bend and turn in ways we didn't expect, and we can't see what's coming up ahead. And it's frightening. What if the road takes us somewhere we don't want to go? What if the road ends altogether? What if the bridge itself isn't even strong enough to make such a turn?
But those hands are there. Holding the bridge up. The road is turning, but it's held in place. The hands are supporting it and guiding it to where it should go. The bridge is strong enough because the support is strong enough.
My life looks like it's a mess right now. The road I'm on has turned, and I didn't see that turn coming before it was already happening. I can't see what's ahead. And I'm afraid to trust in the road, and I question if I'm on the right road at all because it doesn't look like I thought it would.
But God's hands are here. He has not left, even when I can't see what He's doing or why. His hands are holding me up. His hands are supporting me on the road of my life. His hands are here, before the turn and after the turn. He knows where the road is going, and He knows I'm strong enough because He is strong enough.
I can trust Him with the road. It's safe to walk across because He makes it safe. And whatever's around that turn, He's there as well.
